Meeting Rattlesnakes in California
Rattlesnakes are venomous and caution should be used when hiking.
Being outdoors, in nature, restores the human spirit. Our senses come alive with the experience of fresh air, the fragrance of trees, the sight of deer, the sound of rattlesnakes. Well, maybe not so much the rattlesnakes, unless you include hairs tingling on the back of your neck as feeling restored. California is home to seven species of rattlesnakes, and most hikers and many residents have seen them and heard their distinctive rattle from varying distances. In warm weather the cold blooded snakes bask in the sun. Not uncommonly, they find a sunny spot smack dab on a hiking trail.
Rattlesnakes are feared because they are venomous, using their bite to inject a poisonous substance. In fact, rattlesnake venom allows them to immobilize their prey, such as squirrels and rabbits. When rattlesnakes bite humans, it is because they are threatened. Although most bites are not lethal, they do require emergency medical treatment and may have severe consequences.
