How to create a baby backpack as a unique and useful gift for a Mommy-to-Be.
I purchased a baby backpack from the Avon Company. It was approximately 9 inches in depth and 7 ½ inches wide. It had a purple and pink back and bottom and a clear, see-through front and sides. It contained a pink "Rock-A-Bye Baby Blanket" with a pink bunny head on the corner. The "nap-blankie" sported a pink heart that plays "Rock-A-Bye Baby" when pressed-just perfect for those moments when entertainment is a must and a nap is crucial for the little sleepyhead. The company has blue ones for boys. I decided to use the backpack as a container for other baby items as well. I purchased items that I knew a new mother would appreciate on a day-out with baby. Some of these included baby lotion, powder, washcloths, wipes, Q-tips, bib, and burp cloth. I used small sample sizes of the lotion and powder so that fitting them inside the backpack would be easy and also be light for Mom to carry. Other items that could be included are several extra new-born sized diapers, baby nail clippers, nose syringe and diaper rash ointment.
Then my thoughts turned toward some comfort items for the new mom herself. I was sure she would appreciate a small size container of sanitizing lotion and a good moisturizing hand cream. I added a small pack of tissues and a miniature hair brush and mirror. I tucked all these items for Mom inside a separate plastic case that fitted perfectly in the bottom of the backpack.
The backpack makes a convenient item to leave in the car for those times when a quick errand must be run and Mom doesn't necessarily have to haul the usual large diaper bag. It is also a good item to place near an exit door at home in an emergency. It can be picked up quickly and contains everything needed for baby on the spur of the moment.
Later, as baby grows into a toddler, the backpack can be used for small toys, snacks and a sippy cup. A "little mom" can even use it for her doll and doll clothes. It could be useful to hold items such as small books, crayons and scribble pad.
