How to Pace Yourself During a Hike

Hiking is an excellent for of exercise, as it builds stamina and can help keep you fit and healthy. But how should you pace yourself during a hike?

Hiking is an excellent for of exercise, as it builds stamina and can help keep you fit and healthy. But how should you pace yourself during a hike?

Start with an Easy Hike If You're a Beginner

If you are a beginner hiker, you should look for easy trails to start off with, rather than challenge yourself to a more complicated hike that you are not yet ready for. Whenever you start a new exercise regime or activity, you will need to give your body time to adjust to it, rather than throw yourself in right away and expect instant results. The same is true with hiking.

It is Not a Race

Many make the mistake of viewing a hike as a competition against their friends or family members, and thus push themselves beyond what they can comfortably bear by quickly racing through the trail. Rather than compare yourself with friends and family who are seasoned hikers, move at your own pace.

There is no shame in admitting that you need to sit down for a rest, stop for a drink or slow down the pace. It is far better to acknowledge your own limitations than it is to try and bluff your way through the trail and then pay the consequences before you have even made it to the end.

Coping with Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness can strike when you least expect it, so if you are ascending to a higher elevation to what you are normally used to, be prepared. Take along plenty of water and sip it regularly during the hike. You should also have a backup plan in case you start to succumb to altitude sickness.

If you start to feel nauseous, lightheaded or disoriented, descend to a lower altitude straightaway, as these are symptoms of altitude sickness. Once you have adjusted to the higher elevation (it can take several days to do so) you can them resume normal activities, including a hike.

A hike should be fun and enjoyable, not a laborious chore that leaves you aching, sore and exhausted. Pace yourself during the hike by preparing well in advance, starting out with an easy trail and remembering that a hike is not a race to the finish line. Altitude sickness can overtake anyone who is not used to a higher elevation, so be prepared to stop what you are doing and to descend to a lower altitude if you start to exhibit signs and symptoms of altitude sickness.
