Jackson County Florida
Bordering both Georgia and Alabama, Jackson County serves up plenty of Old Florida plus hiking trails through hardwood forest. Take a unique tour through Florida Caverns State Park.
Jackson County began in 1822, and now covers 954 square miles. It's named after Andrew Jackson, who became the first military governor of the Florida Territory in 1821. The county's north side borders Alabama, and part of the east side borders Georgia. This is the only Florida county bordering both states. Jackson is in the Central time zone.
Marianna is the county seat and an incorporated city, along with Greenwood, Bascom, Alford, Grand Ridge, Malone, Jacob City, Sneads , Graceville , Cottondale and Campbellton
Also known as "The City of Southern Charm," Marianna has many historic homes, among them is the Hinson House Bed and Breakfast. The central area comprises the Marianna Historic District, consisting of 181 renovated structures.
Parks and Recreation
Florida Caverns State Park is the only place in Florida where public cave tours are offered. Covering over 1,300 acres, this park also has many campsites plus hiking trails open to bicycles and horseback riders. .
The underwater caves at Blue Springs Recreational Area are a major scuba diving attraction. Five springs feed into Merritt's Mill pond, a popular scenic spot within Blue Springs offering great fishing.
The Chipola River Paddling Trail stretches over 50 miles as it heads south from Marianna, traveling by dense hardwood forest and limestone bluffs.
Three Rivers State Park is on the northeast side of Jackson County. On the shore of Lake Seminole, this park offers miles of hiking trails through the hardwood forest along the bluffs. Visitors can rent a cabin or stay in the campground. Beside the campground is a 100-foot fishing pier. Fishing and canoeing are popular here, right by the Georgia border.
Transportation
Interstate highway I-10 crosses the county roughly east-west. US highway 90 runs east-west, passing through Marianna. US highway 231 runs north-south.
