Five Beautiful Year-Round Hiking Trails in the State of Georgia
The state of Georgia offers great trails to enjoy with each change of the season. If you are a avid hiker living in Georgia or visiting as a tourist these five trails offer enjoyment for all skill levels.
Fort Mountain State Park: Any parks that are fortunate enough to be located along the Blue Ridge Mountains will offer hikers breathtaking views and crisp mountain air. Fort Mountain State Park has three different trails. These trails go up and down the mountain along the Blue Ridge. At the top of the mountain, it overs you a stunning view of the town of Chatsworth, 2000 feet below. All of these trails lead to a mysterious wall that is over 855 feet long. It is believed that it was built by Indians for a ritual ceremony. For lodging the park offers campers, cottages and RV parking. Picnic tables are scattered about. Wonderful blueberry bushes will great you during your hikes so enjoy a few if available. If you visit during the warmer months, you can take advantage after your hike, of the sand beach located on the mountain lake.
Amicolata River Trail: Nestle in the quiet town of Dawsonville is a beautiful 2.6 mile trail that loops. The trails starts out with a wonderful walk along the lower Amicolata River and its rapids. Continuing on, it offers great views, a old logging road, streams and a picture perfect forest. This trail is perfect for the beginner hiker.
Coosa Backcountry Trail: If you are experienced hiker, then this 12.8 mile loop is perfect. It winds its way through waterfalls, streams and picturse forest, that eventually leads you into the Vogel State Park. About one quarter of the trail crosses through the Blood Mountain Wilderness. The mountains are rugged and sometimes steep. Be prepared for it to take all day, or to spend the night. Also, be warned, there have been sightings of Black Bears along this trail.
Kennesaw Mountain Trail: This trail is definitely for the experienced hiker. It is steep and rocky. The beauty of this trail is not only found in its surrounds but the offering of Civil War Artifacts. Here you will find etchings of soldiers names in rocks, cannons, rifle pits, and signal platform. The mountain offers great views of four different cities, depending on if you are facing north or south. There is a beautiful mountain spring with a bit of folk history. The water was once sold as a cure all, however, today, the water is not safe to drink.
Arabia Mountain: This is the sister mountain to the famous Stone Mountain, in its terrain. It is also a rock outcrop. The trail is suitable for the beginner to intermediate hiker. It is three miles long and offers a one of a kind 360 degree view at the top. It is located in a 2000 acre protect woodland in South Dekalb County. Hiking will place you in a pine forest, around amazing vernal pools, over granite bridges and alongside a wooden boardwalk. Nestled in the trees are nests of the Cooper hawks.
