Hiking in the Pikes Peak Region

The Palmer Point Trail is a 4.1-mile intermediate hike that's fun for all.

I recently enjoyed a moderately-paced hike on the Palmer Point Trail, and although it left me wanting a bit more, overall I found it quite to my liking. The trail is rated blue (intermediate) using Palmer Park's colored ski area-style rating system of green/blue/black, but I found it easy enough that one could bring a novice or a kid along with them and still keep a decent pace.

Palmer Point rolls along with lots of short climbs combined with a few flat areas. There are also quite a few technical, rocky sections, with many stone and wood step ups and drop offs. None, however, require a Herculean effort and a hiker in decent enough shape should have no problems. I was able to spend several minutes basking in the sun during barren, rocky sections as I hiked, but I also managed to take advantage of the coolness of several shady areas as well. The trail is mostly hard-pack dirt with a few sandy spots. I absent-mindedly hiked it the morning after a fairly heavy rainfall (rather than waiting a few hours for the sun to dry the trail out,) and I found that the resulting mud was a hard, somewhat tacky mud that barely stuck to my shoes and kept the footprints to a minimum.

I also enjoyed a couple of wildlife sightings in the form of deer as I sauntered along, one of which I spied as she worked his way across a small open area, the other spied upon me while lurking in some nearby bushes as I passed by, possibly in hopes that I might drop some food. Of course, she also might have just been waiting for me to vacate the area so she could get on with her deer business, but we managed to stare at each other for a good minute or so before I lost patience and resumed by hike. It was, after all, her turf, not mine. Kids will not only enjoy any deer sightings, but also the occasional bunny rabbit scampering across the trail in search of a hiding place.

Palmer Point is accessible on the northern end of the park at Austin Bluffs and Brenner Drive-park on Brenner Drive and hike up the bike path a ways to where it intersects with the trail. It's also accessible on the west side of the park via the North Canon Trailhead at the Paseo Street entrance (by the Mark Reyner Stables,) where there is a public restroom and a water fountain. If you hike counter clockwise, as I did, you'll need to cross the Paseo at the trailhead and hike east a little ways on the nearby Grandview Trail (rated green.) Just south of the entrance to the Lazy Land Picnic Area, you'll cross the road and rejoin the Palmer Point Trail. Otherwise, the trail is well marked and easy to follow.

The trail is popular with other types of users, so be on the lookout for not only other hikers, but also trail runners, mountain bikers, and equestrians, as well as the occasional dog. However, everyone I encountered was courteous and friendly and the trail was far from crowded-this on a beautiful Saturday morning. Overall, I had a good time hiking the Palmer Point Trail; it's a fun little hike and worth doing so that you can check it off your list.
