Visit Chamonix in the Summer

There is more to the French alpine village of Chamonix than skiing. Visiting here in the summer offers endless miles of hiking trails, snow capped peaks and exceptional natural beauty.

Chamonix is a French alpine village located at the base of the Mont Blanc massif. Visiting Chamonix in the summer is a trip that anyone can enjoy, you don't have to go hiking or be super fit to admire the surrounding peaks and nature. The peaks around Chamonix reach 3842 metres into the sky and you will get a spectacular view of the Alps from near the top. To reach the top you do not need to a an expert climber there is a much less physically exerting route, taking a cable car to the top of Mont Blanc.

Another excellent experience that can be had from visiting Chamonix is by taking the Montenvers train. This route gives you a chance to get a good view of the landscape on the way to the Mer de Glace. There is also a cable car that takes you up to the glacier. This is the largest glacier found in the French Alps. It is seven kilometres long and up to two hundred metres deep. If you prefer a more exciting and thrilling way to reach the Mer de Glace you can arrive on skiis. You can ski here from the Aiguille de Midi.

The landscape around the French village of Chamonix is wonderful hiking territory. In the summer there are lush pastures, snow capped peaks, mountain flowers. There a number of hiking trails but for some of the best views of Mont Blanc and Mer de Glace choose the route that takes you along the Grand Balcon Sud. This hike begins at Planpraz station, which is located on the Brevant Mountain. The hike usually takes around two hours and ends at Flegere station. If you want to take a few hikes on your trip to Chamonix you won't have a problem.

There are over 350km of marked out hiking trails in the area. The hikes are suitable to various levels of experience and physical fitness. So if want something leisurely you will find it. A good suggestion for anyone that is new to mountain hiking is to take a guide with you. They will be familiar with the trails and local flora. They will also be fully aware of any safety issues necessary for safely hiking in the mountains.

Other attractive activities found in Chamonix during the summer are tobogganing, an ice cave and the local market. You are maybe thinking tobogganing; don't you need snow for that? Not in Chamonix. Just head to the Loisirs des Planards and toboggan down their concrete tracks. They charge 5 euros for one ride or 25 euros for six times down the tracks.

The Chamonix market is held every Saturday morning. It is a great place to taste the local cheeses, meats and view some local culture. Besides taking in the jaw dropping view of the Mer de Glace you can also visit its ice cave. For a return trip to Mer de Glace on the Montenvers train that includes admittance to the ice cave expect to pay around 23 euros for an adult and 16 euros for kids.
