Plastic Tablecloths Make Quick Cute Decorative Rain Ponchos and Rain Bonnets
Rain ponchos and rain bonnets can be made from plastic tablecloths.
All you have to do to make a rain poncho is to fold the tablecloth in half and cut a watermelon or half circle in the center of the cloth on the side that won't open. It's the same technique as you would do to fold a piece of paper in half and cut a half moon or half circle to make a full circle in the paper when its opened up.
Now you can slip your head through the circle in the tablecloth and wear it as a rain poncho. If the circle isn't big enough to slip over your head repeat the same steps except move the cut a space or two over and follow the half circle, which will enlarge the original circle.
A rain bonnet can be made by folding a tablecloth in half and cutting out a circle large enough to bend over your head. Use a safety pin to pin it underneath your chin. You can fold the bonnet in half and cut two small half circles on each side of the bonnet to make two mini-circles that you can slide a piece of elastic through to make a chin strap to hold the bonnet on. Slide an end of the elastic through a hole and tie the end left behind on the outside of the hole. Pull the string through the other hole and tie the elastic in a knot so the elastic won't pull through.
Cuts to tablecloth may fray and the elastic could pull through.
If you use the same tablecloth for both poncho and bonnet make sure to cut the bonnet out on one half or less of the tablecloth and then cut a straight line down the tablecloth to remove the hole that the bonnet left.
If a tablecloth is too large you may have to cut it in half before starting, as some tablecloths are really long. Check the package for sizing before purchase to estimate length and width.
